Narvik vs Tromsø for the Northern Lights: An Honest Comparison

4 min read

We are based in Narvik, so you can expect us to have a bias. We will try to stay honest. The truth is, Tromsø works well for some travellers, while Narvik works better for others. Whether you are planning a Northern Lights Tour in Tromsø or Narvik, pretending otherwise won’t help you make a plan.

Here’s how the two compare on the factors that decide whether an aurora trip actually works.

Latitude and aurora odds: a tie

Tromsø sits at 69.6 degrees north. Narvik is at 68.4 degrees. Both are inside the Arctic Circle and both lie under the auroral oval. The zone where auroras are most active. That one degree difference might sound important. It isn’t. On any given night the aurora oval shifts more than the distance between these two towns. Anyone who says Tromsø has better aurora chances just because it’s further north is exaggerating a tiny difference.

Verdict: No difference. Focus on things.

Weather and cloud cover: a difference in Narvik’s favour

This is where the two places truly differ. It matters. Clouds are what stop people from seeing the northern lights. Tromsø is an island city on a stretch of coast. It gets a lot of weather. Operators there often drive hours toward inland valleys or into Finland just to avoid clouds.

Narvik, on the other hand, lies further inland at the head of the Ofotenfjord, surrounded by mountains. The terrain creates microclimates. It might be raining in town while it’s clear just a short drive away. This is particularly important when planning the best time to see northern lights in Narvik, as you often need to travel to find a clear sky and improve your chances of witnessing the aurora.

Verdict: Narvik has an edge. Escaping clouds usually takes time.

Crowds: not close

Tromsø is the tourism capital of Norway. It sees numbers of visitors during aurora season. On a night popular spots can hold dozens of cars and hundreds of people. Some enjoy the energy. Others feel it ruins the experience. Narvik has a population of around 20,000. It’s a working town. Focused on iron ore and the railway. It hasn’t been built for mass tourism. It’s common for us to have a viewpoint completely to ourselves.

Verdict: Narvik, if you value peace and quiet.

Getting there: Tromsø wins

Tromsø has an airport with regular direct flights to several European cities and daily connections from Oslo. It’s easy to reach. Narvik uses Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes, 57 km from the town. There are flights from Oslo. Under two hours. But then a one-hour bus or car ride to reach Narvik. International flights to Evenes are limited and seasonal so most visitors fly to Oslo first.

Narvik does have one advantage Tromsø can’t match: it is Norway’s northernmost railway station. You can arrive on the night train from Stockholm. Take the Arctic Train across the border toward Abisko.

Verdict: Tromsø wins, unless you're looking for a train journey.

Cost: Narvik, usually

Norway is expensive everywhere. Tromsø carries a tourism premium. Accommodation prices rise sharply during aurora season. Demand pushes prices higher around Christmas and February school holidays.

Narvik is generally cheaper for lodging and food. Tour prices tend to be lower. It’s not a budget destination. Nothing in the Arctic is. The difference over a week is noticeable.

Verdict: Narvik. Compare prices for your dates.

Tour experience: depends on what you want

Tromsø has a number of tour operators. That means a range of choices. Reindeer sledding with Sami hosts, whale watching in early season aurora photography workshops and more. It also means wide variation in quality and large group sizes. Coach tours with 30 to 50 people are common.

Narvik has an operator scene. Fewer options, but groups are much smaller. Our tours cap at eight guests. This creates a more personal offtrack experience, where the guide gives you individual attention, helps with camera settings and adapts the plan to the group.

Verdict: Tromsø for variety, Narvik for intimacy.

Scenery: a matter of taste

Tromsø is beautiful. An island city between fjord and mountain with the Arctic Cathedral and the Fjellheisen cable car. Narvik’s landscape is dramatic and more alpine. Steep mountains drop into the Ofotenfjord. The Hallogaland Bridge spans the water with mountains over 1,000 metres rising behind. For aurora photography sharp mountain silhouettes in the foreground are harder to find in Tromsø.

Verdict: Preference.

So which should you choose?

Choose Tromsø if:

●       You want the travel logistics

●       You want a wide range of activities

●       You enjoy city nightlife and restaurants

●       You’re combining the trip with whale watching

●       You have only a short time and can’t afford a transfer day

Choose Narvik if:

●       You value groups and quiet spots

●       You’re on a tighter budget

●       You want dramatic mountain scenery

●       You’re already coming through on the Ofoten Line or heading to Lofoten

●       You’ve been to Tromsø before and found it too crowded

Consider doing both. They are four hours apart by direct bus with several departures each day. A week split between the two makes an itinerary. Many of our guests arrive that way.

No matter what you choose the important advice is the same: give yourself at least three or four nights. Cloud cover, not location, is what often decides whether you see the lights.
